Stopping kernicterus requires four critical actions: avoid practices that promote hyperbilirubinemia, recognize jaundice and seek care early, measure plasma bilirubin concentration and, when indicated, provide effective phototherapy. SKi addresses these needs through education of parents and providers, by offering a smartphone based point of care bilirubin assay, and providing communication links between primary care and treatment centers.
Educational materials can be accessed by organizations and individuals without becoming a member of SKi. Using the cellphone App and test cards provided by Bilimetrix-USA (BiliPic or future e-health based innovations) automatically enrolls you as a member of Stop Kernicterus International.
The Stop Kernicterus International system is most effective when used by a network of referral treatment centers and primary care clinics. BiliPic results are simulaneously displayed on the users cell phone and transferred to a SKi linked cloud platform. The plasma bilirubin level and any additional manually inserted clinical data can be accessed by the referral treatment center and by SKi networks such as cooperating hospital groups, professional organizations, and state or federal health departments. Thus, in addition to supporting patient care, the SKi program can be adapted to facilitate clinical research and population data acquisition.
Individuals wishing to experience point of care smartphone based bilirubin screening are also welcome. You will be enrolled under the umbrella of the Bilimetrix-USA organization but not have the advantages offered to provider networks. The point of care BiliPic system requires an android smartphone App, a camera with 5 megapixels resolution or better, and 1-2 drops of blood applied to a blood cell-plasma separator.
